Parent & Tot

Parent & Tot

Can Swim Academy’s Parent & Tot program lets you bond with your child while introducing them to the water in a safe, playful way. Through fun, age-appropriate activities, parents help their little ones (ages 4 months to 3 years) learn basic water skills like floating, splashing, blowing bubbles, and jumping in. Certified instructors offer safety tips and guidance, building Water Smart® habits from the start.

Front Crawl

Rookie Patrol

Rookie patrol is the first level of the program and begins with basic stroke technique, lifesaving drills and some fitness/endurance training. Participants will focus on:

  • Developing their front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke

  • Learning water survival skills and some first aid techniques

  • Building endurance with proper technique, with a 350 metre workout and a 100 metre timed swim

This level best prepares swimmers working towards their Bronze Star.

Star Patrol

Star Patrol is the final and most difficult level of the Swim Patrol program. This level demands good physical condition and lifesaving judgment. Participants will:

  • Develop lifesaving, water rescue and first aid skills, including a non-contact drowning rescue

  • Further refine front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke by performing over 100 metres each

  • Complete 600 metre workouts and 300 metre timed swims

This level fully prepares swimmers for Lifeguarding courses and Bronze Cross.

Lifesaving

Bronze Star

The Bronze Star course develops personal fitness, lifesaving skills, and swimming proficiency. Swimmers will refine their stroke technique, self-rescue skills, and further their fitness skills. It is a stepping stone to the Bronze Medallion course and focuses on fitness and safety in the water. Participants will:

  • Demonstrate stroke technique for front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke

  • Demonstrate whip kick, eggbeater, and scissor kick in emergencies

  • Display proper victim recognition, the ability to decipher a non-swimmer versus a weak swimmer

  • Understand and execute single-rescuer CPR on an adult and a child

  • Complete a 400 metre fitness workout

Bronze Cross

Bronze Cross shifts from lifesaving to lifeguarding. Swimmers strengthen their lifesaving skills and will begin to apply techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross focuses on teamwork and communication in order to best respond to aquatic emergencies. All skill items are to prepare candidates for their National Lifeguard certification and leadership certification courses. Participants will:

  • Rescue and treat non-fatal drowning victims

  • Perform two-rescuer removals with a trained personnel, with and without a spine board

  • Perform a team search with bystanders and organization of shallow and deep water searching

  • Demonstrate two-rescuer drowning resuscitation for an adult, child and infant

  • Demonstrate spinal injury management with a non-breaking or breathing victim in shallow water or on land

  • Perform a rescue Drill; recovering a submerged victim and transporting them appropriately

  • Participate in an endurance challenge: 400m swim within 11 minutes

Lifesaving

Bronze Medallion

Bronze Medallion further challenges swimmers mentally and physically. Swimmers will learn the four elements of water rescue, judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness. Critical thinking is required to ensure safe decisions both in and around the water. All skill items reflect the knowledge of the Lifesaving Society. Participants will focus on:

  • Victim recognition, simulation of; weak swimmers, unconscious victims, injured victims and non-swimmers

  • Lifesaving strokes; front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke

  • Lifesaving kicks including whip kick, eggbeater and scissor kick for safety and survival swimming

  • Victim removals with an untrained bystander of both an unconscious and conscious victim

  • Carries through towing and assistive carries for a passive victim

Lifesaving

Swim Patrol

Can Swim Academy’s Swim Patrol program is offered for those interested in building their leadership skills and lifesaving skills and advancing beyond our Swimmer levels. Our Swim Patrol program will provide swimmers with the foundational skill set needed to succeed in the advanced lifesaving courses (Bronze Star, Medallion, Cross). The three progressive levels in our Swim Patrol program will further improve stroke technique, endurance and lifesaving skills.

Ranger Patrol

Ranger Patrol is the second level of the Swim Patrol program, where swimmers will learn more advanced rescue techniques, lifesaving skills, and higher intensity endurance training. Participants will focus on:

  • Increased distance for stroke techniques, further improving front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke
  • Learning assisted rescues, first aid, including choking and primary assessment, and non-contact rescues
